How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage Do I Really Need?
If you're like most brides, one of the first questions you'll ask when planning your wedding is: "How many hours of photography coverage do I actually need?" The answer? It depends on your vision, your timeline, and the kinds of memories you want to preserve. We want you to have enough time to capture every meaningful moment without feeling rushed—or paying for time you don’t need. This guide will walk you through how to figure out what’s right for your day, what’s commonly included, and the biggest factors to consider when booking your wedding photography package.

Most Couples Book Between 8–10 Hours of Coverage
In our experience photographing weddings in Calgary and beyond, we’ve found that 8 to 10 hours of coverage tends to be the sweet spot for most full-day weddings.
This range usually allows enough time to cover:
- Getting ready moments
- Details (dress, rings, invitations)
- First look (if doing one)
- Ceremony
- Family + wedding party photos
- Couple portraits
- Reception details
- First dances + speeches
- Golden hour portraits
Of course, every wedding is different—and some may need more or less time. Let’s break down your options.
Understanding Wedding Photography Coverage Options
6 Hours of Coverage
Best for: Smaller, simpler weddings with limited locations.
Includes:
- Ceremony
- Formal portraits (family + couple)
- A short reception window (like dinner, toasts, or first dance)
Keep in mind: 6 hours often doesn’t include getting ready photos or reception dancing coverage unless everything happens in one place and is very condensed.
8 Hours of Coverage
Best for: Traditional weddings with one or two locations.
Includes:
- Final touches of getting ready
- Ceremony
- Family + bridal party photos
- Couple portraits
- Reception events through toasts and first dances
- Sneak away for golden hour photos
This is our most commonly booked package because it allows just enough breathing room without stretching too long.
10 Hours of Coverage
Best for: Weddings with multiple locations, cultural elements, or extended receptions.
Includes:
- Full getting ready (start to finish)
- First look
- Extended portrait time
- Ceremony
- Cocktail Hour
- Full reception coverage (into the dance party!)
- Late-night traditions (cake cutting, grand exit, etc.)
If you’re planning a sparkler exit or special night-time event, this might be the best option for you.
12 Hours of Coverage
Best for: Couples who want their entire story told—from the quiet morning moments to the grand finale at night.
Includes:
- Full morning prep for both partners (hair, makeup, robe photos, flat lays)
- Letter readings, prayer circles, and first looks with family
- Ceremony + portraits with ample buffer time
- Multiple portrait locations or outfit changes
- Full reception, from speeches to late-night dancing
- Coverage of grand exit, after-party, or cultural rituals
Why consider 12 hours?
- You never feel rushed—there’s time to pause, soak in the moment, and breathe.
- Every part of the day is captured in detail, including moments you may not even witness (like guests arriving or your partner getting ready).
- You’ll have the most complete visual narrative of your wedding day to cherish forever.
This is ideal for larger weddings, multicultural celebrations, or anyone who values storytelling through photos and wants zero compromises.
Ask Yourself These 5 Questions Before You Decide:
- Are you doing a first look?
This usually adds 45–60 minutes to your pre-ceremony timeline. - How many locations will we shoot at?
More locations = more time needed to travel and reset. - Do you want full getting-ready coverage?
Think makeup, hair, dress zipping, bridal details, and champagne toasts. - How important is the reception to you?
Want to remember the party, dancing, and late-night fun? You'll need extended coverage. - Is your wedding packed with cultural or faith-based traditions?
These beautiful moments deserve time to breathe and be captured thoughtfully.
Pro Tip: Build Your Timeline Around the Coverage You Want
Rather than stuffing everything into a tight window, we encourage our couples to build a photography-friendly timeline that allows margin—so you’re not sprinting through your own wedding day.
We help all our clients with a customized wedding timeline that fits your flow and photography goals perfectly.
What Happens If I Need More Time?
If you’re still unsure, start with 8 hours and adjust from there. We always give our couples the option to add hours if your day runs longer—or we can tailor a package based on your specific needs. Flexibility is key.
And yes—if you’re working with a second shooter (which we highly recommend!), we can capture multiple angles, prep locations, and more events simultaneously, often reducing the need for extra hours.
Real Couple Example: The 8-Hour Sweet Spot
Bride: Emily & Groom: Josh
Wedding: Calgary ranch venue
Coverage: 8 hours
- 12:30 – Getting ready
- 2:00 – First look + portraits
- 3:30 – Ceremony
- 4:30 – Family photos + cocktail hour
- 5:45 – Grand entrance + dinner
- 7:00 – Speeches & first dances
- 7:45 – Sunset couple photos
- 8:30 – Coverage wraps
Their album captured everything they hoped for, and they still had plenty of time to breathe and enjoy the moment. That’s exactly what we aim for.
Final Thoughts: It’s About More Than Time—It’s About Experience
Your wedding photography isn’t just about documenting—it’s about preserving.
You deserve to feel confident, comfortable, and completely present on your wedding day—not checking your watch to see if your photographer is leaving in 20 minutes.
We want you to have time to laugh, cry, celebrate, and be fully in the moment—and that means planning smart coverage that suits your day.
